Time for Your Yearly (Credit) Checkup

Consumer Federal Protection Bureau advises consumers in a recent notice to get their yearly credit checkup.

Many people are not aware that under federal law they can obtain their credit reports for free once per year. You can obtain your own credit reports by calling Annual Credit Report at 877-322-8228.

Credit reports are important because of how many aspects of your life they influence. They affect everything from jobs, to auto loans, to where you can live. It is also one of the first indicators of identity theft. Most people have no idea what is being reported, or how to fix it if it’s wrong.

If you obtain you credit reports and find inaccuracies, our office may be able to help you draft disputes to the credit bureaus at no cost. The credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian, along with a number of other smaller ones) are liable to you for statutory damages and actual damages under the Fair Credit Reporting Act if they refuse to fix their mistakes.

CFPB, Check Your Credit Report at Least Once a Year
